Purina Sponsored Cover Dog Points Program

The formula by which the Cover Dog of the Year and Cover Dog Handler of the Year sponsored by Purina are as follows

Champion: 12 x’s the number of dogs entered
Runner up: 8 x’s the number of dogs entered

The Purina Cover Dog of the Year and Purina Cover Dog Handler of the Year awards

Rules for the awards:

1.Must be open trials
2.Pay a significant purse
3.Do not limit entries

-Points are calculated on all open approved Championships run on Ruffed Grouse and/or North American Woodcock.
-The minimum requirements for dogs are to be followed. Trials must not limit entries or refuse eligible dogs.
-Winning handlers are awarded significant purses.
-New clubs or a new stake must run for two years to have a chance to be points eligible. The first two years, the club/stake will be in what’s called a “probationary period”. The club must then apply to the points committee to receive Purina Points. After receiving points in the third year the new club/stake should run in accordance to listed criteria. If a points stake is not held for 2 years, its status will revert to the previously mentioned “probationary period”.
-Significant format changes of a stake which may result in a significant points swing, may take 2 years until higher points kick in.
-All approved points stake must include “Cover Dog Points Program sponsored by Purina” in field trial ad.
-Essential data forms for points trials must be submitted to Purina Committee Secretary, Bruce Mueller, within 30 days from completion.
-Should a Championship be reverted to a Shooting Dog stake, NO points will be awarded.
-All approved points stakes must include Cover dog Points Program Sponsored by Purina in the field trial as.

Derby Cover Dog Points Program:

1.A derby stake must be scheduled and run in conjunction with a scheduled and officially recognized open, all-breed, broke dog stake to be eligible for points.
2.The trial must not limit entries or refuse any eligible runnable dogs as defined by “The Minimum Requirements for Dogs”.
3.A significant purse must be awarded to the winning handlers.
4.Each club will receive points for one stake in the spring and one in the fall.
5.A new club/stake must be run for two years to have a chance to be point eligible. The first two years the club/stake will be in a “probationary period”. The club should run in accordance with other listed criteria during the “probationary period”. Points stakes not run for two years will revert to “probationary period”.
6.Significant format changes of a stake which may result in significant points swing may also require two years until higher points begin.
7.To win the award, a derby MUST have at least one placement where a grouse and/or woodcock was pointed (on Essential Data form simply place a "G" or "W" next to dog name to indicate when pointed).
8.Any new rules or points trial shall require a majority vote by the committee to enact. In the event of a tie, the secretary will cast the deciding vote.

Calculation of Derby Points:
30-minute stakes
First place – 4 x’s number of entries
Second place – 2 x’s number of entries
Third place – 1 x’s number of entries

Grouse Futurity Points
